You Will Despise Steve Carell in The Way, Way Back

admin August 28, 2013

Ever want to see Steve Carell as an unlikeable, petty prick? He does such a good job of it you will never like him again.
Steve Carell makes a way more effective bullying asshat than any of us ever imagined.

The Way, Way Back is a well executed–if by the numbers–coming-of-age dramedy (Christ that’s a lot of hyphens). It features all of the genre’s familiar tropes, like the youthful male protagonist whose initial behavior suggests borderline autism and the pretty but offbeat girl who takes a shine to him and helps bring him out of his shell. If you enjoy movies in this vein (and God knows I do), then catch it in theaters because you’re going to love it.

What caught me off-guard in The Way, Way Back was Steve Carell’s performance, in which plays an incredibly unlikeable ass of a being. The performance was masterfully believable in an, “I’ve met people exactly like this dong” sort of way. It also made me realize I had never watched Steve Carell in a role where he wasn’t someone we rooted for. And, if I’m being honest, seeing that man act like a dick is a lot like seeing a pretty girl take a dump: You want things to go back to the way they were, but you’re not sure if they ever can. I’m going to spend the rest of the day looking at Michael Scott memes and mouthing the words, “She was a ho for sho” to preserve any chance of I have left of enjoying Anchorman 2.
